Child shaking at her first deer hunt

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSFnmM12LOQ

A slightly bizarre video if you are not used to hunting. However it is a great demonstration of trusting the body’s natural tremors in response to the adrenaline surge of this young girls first deer hunt.

The person who posted the video calls the shaking an ‘adrenaline dump’ in the written comment on youtube. That is as good a description as I have heard of why we shake. The person shooting the video does a great job of making the response of shaking really normal and safe. Following Stephen Porges we could say the social engagement he offers helps allow the young girl to feel safe to shake.

Successful First Level 1 TRE Workshop in Dublin

TRE group on the April 2012 Level 1 in Dublin

The first TRE Level 1 in Ireland went very well. People were fired up by the experience  of the tremors and many of the attendees are keen to go through the accreditation process. Hopefully that means that over the next year there should be more TRE available in Ireland.

At the moment Raymond Lambert, centre of the image above in a white shirt, is a qualified Level 1 TRE  Trainer based in Dublin (raymondlambert@eircom.net).

I will be running another TRE group on Thursday May 3rd 2012 from 19.00 to 21.00 at Marino Conference Centre, Griffith Ave, Dublin 9. Cost 20 euro, please email Steve Haines (steve.haines@mac.com) to confirm attendance

NEW: One Day Workshop in Bath April 16th 2012

One day Introduction to TRE

workshop at the ‘Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Energy Medicine’ Conference

The TRE workshop will be very practical and is open to anyone – with or without a therapeutic background. The goal is to learn this method to relieve mental and physical stress. We will explore the theory as well as the scientific research supporting TRE’s model of self-healing. There will be plenty of time for discussion and sharing of our experiences.

When: Monday 16th April 2012  –  9:00am – 3:00pm

Course Leaders: Riccardo Cassiani Ingoni and Steve Haines

Venue: Ammerdown Conference Centre. Radstock, Bath, Somerset BA3 5SW

Surviving Trauma Can Make You Stronger

‘Ginsberg (1974) immobilized chicks, and then allowed one group to recover spontaneously, and one to recover, but with prodding and stimuli to terminate the freeze. These groups, along with a third group of chicks that had not been immobilized, were then tested for resiliency to avoid death by drowning. The group that had not been allowed to complete recovery from immobility died first, the group not exposed to immobility next, and the group that had spontaneously recovered from the freeze survived the longest. Clearly the experience of and the spontaneous recovery from freezing carries survival benefits, whereas not being allowed to go through this recovery process seemed to reduce resiliency to life threat.’ Scaer (2001)

This is a very powerful illustration of the innate ability of animals to recover from trauma. Natural/spontaneous recovery actually enhanced the drowning survival rates over the control group. We can transcend trauma and be stronger afterwards, but only if we engage the bodies natural healing mechanisms. Not my favourite philosopher, but Friedrich Nietzsche was right: ‘That which does not kill us makes us stronger.’

The worst option is to interfere and block the natural processes of the body – in this experiment poking and prodding the chicks out of immobility. The chicks were immobilized by holding, the inescapable threat inducing the freeze response.

My experience of TRE (Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises) has shown me that shaking is a natural part of recovery from trauma. Even though it can appear that people are falling apart when shaking, it is better to fall apart briefly, rather than hold on to a life time of chronic tension.

TRE in Dublin, April 2012: New Level 1 Course

We are excited to announce a new  TRE Level 1 course in Dublin on April 13th to 15th 2012. The course will be run by Riccardo Cassiani Ingoni and Steve Haines.

The course will be very practical. The goal is to help you deepen your experience of the tremors. Each morning and afternoon session you will be supported through the exercises and tremors. There will be plenty of time for discussion and sharing of your experiences. We will explore the theory behind the model, see the highlights below. We will also develop your skills so you can begin to support other people through the exercises. By completing the follow up Level 1 certification process you will be certified to teach the exercises to other individuals.

  • Elements of bioenergetics, neuropsychology and psychosomatics
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, ageing
  • Iliopsoas muscle in the fight-flight response
  • Cortex, limbic system, autonomic nervous system
  • Neurogenic tremors in mammals, the neuroethology of the stress response
  • Guidelines for the induction of neurogenic tremors
  • Research on TRE
  • The practical part will be a minimum of 10 hours

Steve and Riccardo talking about TRE, May 2011

This is a short chat between Riccardo and Steve. We discuss focusing on the body, side stepping the neocortex and the mind to heal trauma, processing fear and working with back pain using TRE.

Feedback on TRE Level 1 in London May 2011

The first Level 1 course in  London went really well. 21 people attended. It was a very international group, a couple of people coming from Malaysia and Singapore and others from Italy, Belgium and France.

The video above has a clip of someone shaking, a tutor demonstrating two of the exercises and photos of some the tutors and partcipants. Here is some of the feedback from the course members:

‘Very well presented, explained, and facilitated. Thank you for sharing this important work.’ James Roy, Neurofeedback specialist

‘Excellent course, informative, practical and fun. Instruction with extensive expertise and experience with different backgrounds giving the course depth and richness.’ Susie Poole, Teacher

‘Great presentation and introduction into the new world of body intelligence. Balanced way of presenting from Steve and Riccardo.’ Cheda Mikic, Naturopath

‘Steve and Riccardo are really good teachers, Very polite and friendly, Deva Leya is amazing also. You are a very good team.’ Stephen Hendry, Carpenter

‘Informal and friendly, good sense of humour brought up a relaxed atmosphere in the room which helped the learning process. Comprehensive and well structured.’ Monica Lauber, Craniosacral therapist

‘This was a brilliant course, such simple techniques but so safe and powerful. I have the sensations and feel it will be helpful for me in the future. It would benefit so many people!’ Jenny Wormald, Retired from nursing

‘The pace was perfect. Agenda worked really well!. Theory was clear and both Steve and Riccardo are great teachers with a fantastic attitude and temperament. As for TRE is makes so much sense, and I believe that humanity lost touch with the miracle of having a repair button until now. I’m hooked! Thank you.’ Jeremy Agnew, Consultant
